Set in the heart of the parochial village of Clayton, on the outskirts of Bradford, Rialto Buildings is a property with a colourful history.

Clayton Picture House 1920Opened as the Clayton Picture House on Monday 22nd November 1920, Rialto Buildings was a single deck hall with 450 seats and a proscenium width of 18 feet. In 1925 the Clayton Cinema Company was formed with Frank Lister as manager. In 1932, its name was changed to Rialto Cinema and a sound system was installed.

Fire Disaster

Rialto Cinema closed on the night of Monday 14th September following a fire which broke out only minutes after the cinema had closed for the evening. By 10.45pm smoke was to be seen coming out of the cinema roof, by neighbours. The fire brigade confirmed that between 30 and 40 seats had been destroyed and an area of the floor burnt.

Rialto Cinema Grand Opening 1953The cinema remained closed for over a month. During this time Rialto Cinema was completely refurbished and had a new wide screen installed. The building had a structural refurbishment as well as internal.

The projection room was also fitted with the latest RCA sound reproducer.

A grand re-opening ceremony was held on Monday 19th October 1953 by the Lord Mayor of Bradford.

Closure

The cinema continued for almost another three years and closed on Saturday 17th March 1956.
