Ingrown Toenails

An ingrowing toenail is when a sharp corner of the nail starts to pierce the skin at the side of the toe, or the nail itself grows into the skin.

Usually this occurs in the big toe and can be a problem for people who suffer from diabetes and poor circulation.

The most common cause is by not cutting the nails correctly and wearing tight fitting shoes. The toe becomes red and sore, and if left untreated can sometimes lead to infection where the toe can become inflamed, hot, shiny and too tender to touch.

Treatment & Prevention

Wearing good support shoes with a low heel, cutting the nails straight across and regular use of a nail softener can help prevent the condition, but if the toe does become infected, seeking help from a registered chiropodist is advisable as the infection can spread to the foot.
