UK Wet Wipe Ban

United Kingdom Wet Wipe Ban

What the UK’s new wet-wipe rules mean and why there’s no cause for concern for staff or patients. Aiming to protect the nation’s waterways, the UK government has confirmed that wet wipes containing plastic will be banned. From spring 2027, they will no longer be allowed on the market.

To help protect waterways, the UK government has confirmed a ban on plastic-containing wet wipes. From spring 2027, these products will no longer be permitted for sale or distribution. Read more gov.uk/wetwipeban.

Importantly, the ban includes a crucial exemption for wipes specifically intended for use in medical settings.

Why wipes contain plastic
Wipe materials are engineered for a single purpose: to deliver disinfectant solution effectively onto a surface so it can eliminate harmful micro-organisms.
Polypropylene is particularly suited to this task because it releases the solution efficiently. Alternative fibres tend to absorb more of the disinfectant, reducing the amount transferred to the surface and potentially compromising the level of disinfection achieved.

When the UK government announced new legislation banning the sale and supply of plastic-containing wet wipes in England, our immediate question was: What impact could this have on patient care and infection prevention?

Fortunately, wipes currently used for essential infection control in healthcare environments are exempt from the ban and can continue to be used without disruption.

Why Reducing Plastic Matters in Infection Control

In dental and medical environments, maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and infection control is essential. However, the materials and packaging used for disinfectants and cleaning products also have a significant environmental impact—from production to disposal.

By reducing plastic use in our containers, we’re actively lowering our ecological footprint while maintaining the trusted quality and performance that professionals expect from Bossklein products. Read more gov.uk/wetwipeexemption.
This means that the Bossklein wet wipes will remain unaffected by the ban.

Our view on the ban
Topdental the manufactureres of bossklien products welcomes this ban and supports the move toward plastic-free alternatives for everyday consumer use. These are meaningful, positive changes that can genuinely reduce both plastic production and plastic waste.

The legislation aims to cut the amount of plastic pollution and microplastics entering drains, sewers, and waterways. Because plastic fibres do not biodegrade effectively, they can cause blockages and contribute to long-term environmental damage.

Receiving official confirmation of the ban and a clear timeline has been important. The new rules are scheduled to take effect in spring 2027.

Bossklein wipes already include the all the correct documentation and labelling that purchasers (and regulators) require to show they are for clinical use.

Why the exemption matters
Many wipes sold to the general public—such as baby wipes, cosmetic wipes, and household cleaning wipes—are designed for convenience. Unfortunately, a significant number are still flushed away, allowing them to enter drains and waterways.

Clinical wipes used in dental practices and hospitals are fundamentally different. They undergo rigorous testing for biocompatibility, disinfection performance, and regulatory compliance. Crucially, these wipes do not enter the sewage system.
In clinical settings, disinfectant wipes must be disposed of as clinical or offensive waste, alongside items like used PPE and dressings.

This waste stream is typically incinerated, preventing plastic fibres from contributing to waterway pollution.
A blanket ban without exceptions for medical products would risk disrupting essential infection control processes.

The new UK wet-wipe regulations clearly distinguish between consumer wipes and specialised disinfectant wipes for medical use. This legal clarity safeguards patient and staff safety while ensuring ongoing supply for healthcare providers.
